History
Calvary Chapel of the Triad is in a stream of churches that has become known as the Calvary Chapel movement. Calvary Chapel began in the 60's with an explosion that has continued for the last 40 years. There are now well over 1,300 Calvary Chapels worldwide in many different countries, with 15 now in North Carolina. Ministries such as the Harvest Crusades with Pastor Greg Laurie (who came to Winston-Salem in Sept '02) and Maranatha Music began with the home church Calvary Chapel Costa Mesa with Pastor Chuck Smith. For more on the movement please check out the web site or watch 'A Venture in Faith' movie online.
Pastor David McGee, after many years of ministry in the Calvary Chapel stream, longed to see a Calvary Chapel planted where he was born and raised. His family has lived in Greensboro, NC for over 285 years. With a simple faith in God and a belief that God wanted to see a balanced and Bible-believing church in the Triad, the McGee's started a Bible study in their home in the fall of 2001. The very first night of the study two neighborhood kids received the Lord as their Savior! For the next year, Pastor David also worked for Pastor Greg Laurie and the Harvest Crusades. It was during this time God blessed and knitted a core group of believers together. In October of 2002, this small group of 15-20 believers rented a facility in Kernersville with an expectation that God would continue to bless them.
What has happened since then is a story that shows both the blessing and validation of what God will do with those that trust Him and not growth programs. Since October of 2002, the church has grown from 15 people to a weekly attendance of over 1,400. Although some of this has been 'transfer growth' (folks coming over from different churches) a significant amount has been the ‘unchurched’ and the backslidden. We moved into our existing facility in November 2003. In March 2004, we needed to add a second service to accommodate the growth. The Lord continued to bring people in such numbers that we realized we needed more space. So when God provided the opportunity for us to occupy the entire 37,000 sq. ft. facility, we signed a five year lease and began converting the rest of the building into much needed rooms and a new, larger sanctuary. The conversion of the building from a manufacturing plant into a church is an ongoing process as we continue to grow. We praise God that He is doing such a mighty work here. People are being saved. People are having their faith renewed, marriages healed and their walk with the Lord restored. Today, the growth and excitement of what the Lord is doing continues as we open up our Greensboro satellite campus. Our goal remains still simple and true. We will reach people and teach them the Bible, until the whole world hears. We look forward to seeing what He will do in the future.
We invite you to take part in this exciting time and see what God can do in your life, family and community. God's Word with God's Spirit changing God's people-it's just that simple.
